How to Prepare for a Winter Photo Session in the Breckenridge CO

Winter weather in Breckenridge Colorado can occur in any month from October through May. After all, chances are you may be coming for the skiing! This being said, as many sessions occur during these months, I thought it would be beneficial to share my top 3 tips to staying warm and enjoying these sessions, regardless of the weather!

  1. Dress Appropriately

Although this may seem obvious, it is something I’ll continue to stress. I absolutely love when clients put thought into their outfits and are excited to be wearing outfits they feel great in- just make sure that outfit coincides with the weather in the forecast.

It will likely always feel colder than you expect. As we generally hold all of our sessions at sunset, the warmth of the day will fade and the sunny 35 degree day that you were sweating in while you were skiing may feel quite a bit chillier during your session. Incorporating warm accessories into your outfit planning is the perfect way to look great and stay warm. These is especially important for the kiddos!

Hats, mittens, scarves, vests, and jackets and great items to incorporate into your outfit. If they’re in neutral colors they’re going to look great!

2. Bring Extra Layers

Even if you do not intend to wear every article of clothing in your photos, I HIGHLY recommend bringing extra easy layers that can be tossed on and off in between photos. This could be your ski jacket, it could be the blanket from your airbnb, heck it could even be your bathrobe. We are typically walking about 5-10 min from where we meet and park to where we start taking photos so the warmer you can be during this time, the better you’ll feel when we start shooting!

3. Hand warmers

These are lifesavers! You can pop these handwarmers in your pockets or gloves. You can put toe warmers in your boots! I’ve even seen body warmers that you on your back as well. These are small, cheap items that will provide an extra source of heat during even the coldest of sessions!

Winter sessions in the mountains are truly my favorite. The already beautiful landscape is made all the more magical by the layers of snow and makes the perfect backdrop for any session. Being prepared for what the weather may bring will insure that we get to use the full time slot allotted for the session and capture the beautiful moments that you’ll cherish forever.
